GIG REVIEW | THE NIGHT CAFE @ ROCK CITY

Friday 25 February 2022 | Rock City, Nottingham

To put it simply, this blog post has been a long time coming. This gig has been a long time coming - it was originally scheduled to take place on 8 October 2019 (how crazy is it that that's almost three years ago?!) and has been rescheduled four (I think) times. Obviously, with the Covid-19 pandemic, those postponements weren't surprising but, at times, it really felt like the gig was never going to happen. Anyway, it did happen, and here's my (really) little review.

I've seen The Night Cafe live previously so I think it's safe to say that I had high-ish hopes for this tour, especially after waiting for it for so long, and I wasn't disappointed. The band are incredibly talented and sound just as good live as they do on the studio versions of their songs - perhaps even better.

If I had to offer just one word to summarise the gig, it would be 'chill'. I often listen to bands like The Night Cafe when I need to concentrate but still want something on in the background because they're so chill - it's like you can still have a sing to the music, but it's just calm and quite relaxed. And that's exactly what the gig was - a pretty lovely way to end a crazy week at work, if you ask me. Although, I have to admit, it wasn't as chilled when some fan favourites were played - I'm talking about you, Addicted.

The set list:

  • Intro (0151 Intro)
  • Finders Keepers
  • Felicity
  • The Way of Mary
  • Together
  • Endless Lovers
  • Turn
  • Strange Clothes
  • I know (I'm Sure)
  • Think It Over
  • You Change with the Seasons
  • Addicted
  • Mixed Signals

All in all, the Night Cafe are a fantastic band and it was a really nice night - and, with it being postponed for near enough three years, it was even better treating it as a free night out. I mean, the tickets were only around £13 anyway, but I paid for it a long time ago, so it was a nice treat. I would 100% recommend seeing The Night Cafe live if you ever get the chance - be it at a headline show, supporting show or festival - they are really great and the vibe is really pleasant too so the gig gets a strong four star rating from me. The band, however, will always get a five star rating - listen to them if you haven't already.

PS - can I take a minute to just acknowledge how terrible my photography here is?! I'm slacking!
