LET'S TALK BOOKS

At the beginning of the year, I wrote a blog post all about my goals for the year - something I do every January, without fail. I won't lie, I'm not doing very well with this list of goals. Instagram Live is still well and truly in my life (unfortunately), I'm still doing the disappearing act on my blog (sorry!) and this whole 'read at least one book a month' thing isn't going anywhere - I haven't read a single book this year, and we're almost in April.

I have a million excuses that I could use to justify my lack of goal-achieving but I'm not going to use any of them. Instead, I'm going to share my current reading list with you guys - this way, I get to prove that I do have the intention of achieving this reading goal, right? Here are four books that are on my reading list,  that I do actually own - and will read them... at some point.

the rules do not apply by Ariel Levy

I actually picked this book up at a book exchange kind of thing at an event celebrating International Women's Day back at the start of the month. Having heard good things about the book - which is a memoir of a journalist basically about her desire to have it all and her own journey - I'm very excited to read it.

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

I'm sure most people have at least heard of this one, by now. Crazy Rich Asians has been on my reading list for a while now and I made the mistake of watching the movie before reading the book - I always prefer to read the book first, if I'm going to read it because, quite often, the book is better. But no, I've gone and done it the other way round - and I'm convinced that that's the reason I'm so hesitant to start the book.

The Secret Barrister by anonymous junior barrister

This book actually got recommended to me by a friend / friend's dad back when I was doing my media law module at university. It's basically an anonymous account of what really happens in the law system and why it matters. I got the book for Christmas and I'm actually really kicking myself for not starting it yet because I genuinely am really looking forward to reading it - I find it to be a super interesting topic so can't wait to learn a bit more about it (as cringe as that may sound).

The Discomfort Zone by Farrah Storr

As you probably know, I study journalism at university and am big on magazines - Cosmopolitan is one I buy every month without fail. Farrah Storr is the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, and is an all round inspiration, so when she launched this book - all about pushing through that 'discomfort zone' to get where you need to be - it was straight in my Amazon basket. Again, I'm a bit irritated that I've not read this yet, especially as I went to one of the launch events for the book, but I do want to make the most of it when I read it so I suppose I can let myself off a little bit.

In all honesty, I have no idea when I'm going to have the energy, time or motivation to sit and read books for fun - this university thing is a lot harder than it's made out to be, you know. I used to read all the time, and now I just don't - unless it's journalism or academic. So over Easter, and over the summer - if not before - I'm going to make it my personal mission to actually read. And enjoy it. It's time to get out of this lil rut I'm in.
