LONG HAUL SURVIVAL GUIDE

Ah, the dreaded long haul flight. It's one I know fairly well. Between the hideously small amount of leg room and the horrendous plane food, it's really not a fun experience. But fear not - I'm here to share my top five tips on how to survive the infamous long haul flight.

1. Dress for comfort not fashion

One of the most common tweets that I see during holiday season is that - I'm paraphrasing, here - 'the hardest decision of any holiday is picking an airport outfit'. Let me tell you, it's not. It genuinely baffles me that people place so much emphasis on airport fashion. I get it, you want to look good but, particularly with long haul flights, comfort is key! It may be an unpopular opinion but I'd much rather look hideous but comfortable for eleven plus hours than be uncomfortable but look like I've stepped off the catwalk. If you're desperate to look good - take a change of clothes! But, until I'm a famous celebrity being papped all the time, comfort's the lifestyle for me.

2. Avoid the plane food

This is perhaps my top tip. Plane food is honestly the most vile food in the entire world - universe, even. And yes, I know that sounds ridiculously overdramatic but if you know, you know. It's gotten to the point that I will happily pretend to be asleep in order to avoid eating said plane food. It's disgusting. A better solution (in my opinion, at least) is to eat at the airport and / or buy food to take with you on the flight.

3. Drink lots of water

Kind of sticking with this theme, it's really important to stay hydrated - in life, not just flights but especially flights - so make it a priority to not only take advantage of the free drinks that are offered on most long haul flights but also buy a nice big bottle of water at the airport to take with you. Trust me, you won't regret being prepared!

4. Headphones!

A true necessity are headphones. On most long haul flights, you will get a set provided for you but personally, I'd rather take my own. Yours or not, headphones are a life saver when it comes to flying. It goes without saying that they mean you can listen to music, watch movies and they work as a pretty good noise blocker. I genuinely can't get through even a two hour flight without my headphones to listen to music with - never mind a long haul flight. So yes, headphones are an essential.

5. Take a book or magazine

Similarly to headphones, something to read is an important one for me. I'm not going to sit here and pretend I sit and read for an entire flight but, even if I choose not to, it's good to have the option. I love to read and I think that it actually makes time fly (see what I did there?) a lot quicker and it's generally a nice escape. I tend to always take both a book and magazine so I have the option of which I want to read but either is great, too.

With these five - simple yet hopefully effective - tips, you should be able to make a better situation out of your long haul flight. It is a dreaded experience, I know, but it's all worth it when you arrive in your destination. And that's another tip for you; think about the reward at the end of it!
