Holiday Series 2015: Carry on Luggage

Hello everybody! Today, I am starting my holiday series on my blog - this means that for the next few posts, I will be focusing on writing posts about different aspects of going on holiday and travelling. So to kick this series off, I've chosen to write about what my top 5 essentials are for my carry on luggage (or cabin luggage, whatever you might call it) and how I pack this. I really hope you enjoy this little series that I'm doing and please let me know in the comments what your carry on essentials are!

I typically try to take a backpack with me for my carry on luggage - purely because they're a lot easier to carry around and they're also pretty big. Because they are so big, it's very easy to put your essentials in and a jacket or something to keep you warm on the flight (you can easily fit it back into your bag when you arrive at your destination if you need to).

The Essentials

My typical essentials for my carry on luggage are pretty simple - and a lot of it is technology based items.

1. My iPod (and headphones). For me, this is a no brainer. I cannot go for an entire flight (no matter how long it is) without listening to music on my iPod. I tend to just put a load of music from my iTunes onto my iPod and then press shuffle - it's just so much more exciting this way!

2. My phone. This isn't as much an essential for the actual flight but it's an essential for me to have in airports and on holiday. I mean, how else am I supposed to Instagram my holiday snaps?!

3. Obviously, if I'm taking my iPod and my phone etc. I need to take my chargers with me. I always pack my chargers in my hand luggage/carry on luggage because I find that they're so much easier to find when I get to the Villa or hotel when I arrive at the destination for my holiday or trip.

4. A book and magazines. I absolutely adore reading - whether it's a book or a magazine. I always take tonnes of books on holiday with me and, most of the time, I actually do read them all (last year, I took 7 books on holiday with me and read all of them during the first week of my holiday). I find that the key is to make sure you have a selection of books that are of some interest to you. Anyway, I take lots of books on holiday with me but always put my magazines and one of the books in my carry on luggage - it gives you something to do on the flight if you get bored or it's a super long flight.

5. Sweets and a drink. Okay, the drink cannot be purchased until you pass through security so that's kind of a last minute addition to your essentials but for sweets, I always take Percy Pigs from Marks and Spencer. They are my ultimate favourite sweets of all time and they're great for flights. Honestly, I feel like they're a gift from the Gods. I love them.

Packing your carry on luggage

Honestly, I don't really have a routine for how I pack my carry on luggage. I generally find everything I need and lay it out on my bed. If I'm taking a backpack as my hand luggage, I'll put the heavier things at the bottom (books etc.) and place the magazines I'm taking at the back (so they can be propped up against the back of the bag). I'll then place the things that I'm less likely to use towards the bottom of the bag and then the things I am more likely to use towards the top of my bag. I'll put my jacket on the top too because it's most likely going to be needed on the flight so I need it to be easily accessible.

I hope this post is easy to follow and helps you guys with your packing and carry on luggage essentials. Let me know in the comments or on Twitter if you're going on holiday or on a trip this summer!
