AN AFTERNOON IN CAMDEN | LONDON

Recently, I began a travel series on my blog - this is a series of posts consisting of all things London. You know, the best places to go, where to eat, where to drink et cetera. As I am currently living in the Big Smoke, as it's often known, and I've been thoroughly enjoying exploring my new city and hunting out all the best spots (in my own humble opinion, of course). Anyway, today's location is the iconic Camden - well, Camden Town.

Where?

Camden Town is situated in North West London - in the London borough of Camden.

Travel

If you've seen my previous London themed post, you may know that I primarily use the tube as my preferred mode of transport - I find it the easiest, most efficient mode of travel and, though some may hate it, I really like it. The main tube station for Camden Town is, surprisingly, Camden Town - on the Northern (black) line.

As usual, you can get to Camden Town via the bus services in the city - visit the plan a journey page on the TfL website for more information.

Famous for ...

Here are a few reasons you may have heard of Camden, because, I know you will have.

  • Camden Lock
  • Camden Lock Market
  • Camden Catacombs
  • The Roundhouse - one of London's most famous music venues

Must See

Camden Lock Market - obviously. It's a whole other world there, and it's a really lovely escape from typical London.

For the best Instagram snaps:

Again, Camden Lock Market - it's bright, colourful and all around energetic. The canals are super pretty too.

To Eat and Drink

Honestly, I'd be silly not to recommend you to try some market stall food while you're there. There's cuisine from quite literally every corner of the world and it's a way to experience a little something different.

If you're more into chain eateries, there's a Wetherspoons next to the canal (it's called The Ice Wharf) which is great for a low budget, easy option - it has a lovely view of part of the market, too.

When to go

Similarly to Portobello Market, Saturdays are typically the busiest day so if you want to experience the full atmosphere, you may want to pop there on a Saturday. Again, I'd say it's better to visit on a dry day - it doesn't even have to be sunny - because it's a better atmosphere, in my opinion, and you don't have the issue of umbrellas and raincoats et cetera.

My Verdict

I like Camden Market. I think every visitor to London should visit the area at least once. But it's not my favourite - it's super vibrant and kind of edgy and I do visit a fair amount but it's not my preferred choice - unless it's a nice day. So, all in all: yes, go and visit Camden and definitely have a stroll around the market because, just because I'm not super obsessed with it, it doesn't mean you won't be.
